    About

Lonnie Nelson grew up in construction — literally. The son of a carpenter, he spent his childhood on job sites, and over 34 years has worked through every phase of building a home, from digging footings and framing walls to finish carpentry and project management. That hands-on depth shapes every decision at LJ Nelson Construction.

Today, Lonnie and project manager Melissa Christou lead a firm that does things differently. They integrate building biology principles into every project — prioritizing non-toxic materials, healthy indoor air, and moisture-conscious assemblies that go well beyond code. Whether it's a full-scale remodel, a custom new build, or an ADU, they treat every home as something that should actively support the health of the people living in it.

Based in Santa Barbara, the company specializes in the kind of projects that require real experience: complex remodels, ground-up construction, and additions where the details matter as much as the big picture.

    Why Choose Us

Building or remodeling a home is deeply personal — and a significant investment in your health and well-being. LJ Nelson Construction partners with you from early design through construction, building with intention at every step.

    Building Biology Principles

Every project integrates building biology from the ground up — clean materials free of harmful chemicals, moisture-conscious assemblies that prevent mold before it starts, and construction methods designed to support healthy indoor air quality. This isn't an add-on. It's how they build.

    34 Years of Hands-On Experience

Lonnie has worked every phase of construction over a 34-year career — footings, framing, finish carpentry, project management. That depth of knowledge means fewer surprises, better problem-solving, and a builder who understands your home from the inside out.

    Health-Forward Project Management

Project Manager Melissa Christou is a board-certified Health & Wellness Coach and Building Biology Institute student. She brings an additional layer of health-conscious consultation to every project, from material selection to subcontractor coordination.
